This Woman’s Efforts Just Got India Its 1st Disabled-Friendly Railway Station in Ernakulam

In India, you will find very few places throughout the country that provide facilities for the comfort of differently abled people. Similarly, the state of Indian Railways in this matter is very poor because of which travel becomes a difficult task for disabled people. Throughout the country, it is a very rare sight that one would find a ramp or even a wheelchair that is installed for the ease of differntly abled people. However, it seems Ernakulam will become the first disabled-friendly station in India because of resilient efforts of Virali Modi.

Virali, who is a disability rights activist from Mumbai, started a movement earlier which has made this initiative possible. Her Divyangjan Project, because of which she was travelling around the country to create awareness, is a platform to fight for the basic rights of differently abled people. Her campaign #MyTrainToo was the sole inspiration behind this initiative. And now under this program, Ernakulam station will have permanent ramps, wheelchairs, trained luggage porters to help disabled passengers, and electronic carts to assist and transport disabled passengers.

The project also promises to provide disabled-friendly lounges including an AC lounge, and wheelchair-friendly washrooms within six months. According to The Logical Indian, the project has also been handed over to the Indian Railways and they have been asked to implement the same facilities in other stations all over the state.

"Even in Mumbai, I had witnessed only negative experience. I want this step to be implemented all over India. It does not cost too much," she said.

The idea for the initiative started when Virali, who is also wheelchair-bound, was abused and mishandled by railway porters when she was travelling by train. And then she kickstarted the #mytraintoo campaign and collected petitions from people around the country. But Ernakulam is just a start because despite her requests and campaigns, no other station has implemented facilities that are disabled-friendly.
