What Parenting a Child with Down Syndrome Feels Like, Expressed in This Heartfelt Video
For World Down Syndrome Day (21st March, 2016), Two Minute Parenting, in collaboration with Mumbai-based screenwriter, director, and producer, Megha Ramaswamy released a heartening and informative video featuring parents of abled and differently abled children sharing what parenting is like for them.
Deepa Garwa, the person behind Two Minute Parenting, who is, in her own words, “an opinionated blogger, advocate for Down Syndrome, writer, teacher, and mother of two,” has been eloquently outspoken about what it’s like raising a child with Down Syndrome, through her blog.
“From the day I had decided that I wanted to make a video for World Down Syndrome Day, I knew that I wanted to focus more on parents than the kids since most of the awareness videos primarily had children. I wanted an active communication with the world. The world that still patronises our children and the world which believes that we as parents are faking the happiness,” Deepa wrote in her blog post for World Syndrome Day.
“I can see that he is getting his (sic) mind of his own, so best (sic) thing for me is to let go,” said one of the participants in the video which truly opens one’s eyes to the reality of parenting a differently abled child. There really is no conscientious difference between parenting an abled child and parenting a child with special needs and this video proves it perfectly.
