5 NGOs That Are Helping the Poor and Homeless Stay Warm This Winter

Most of us are privileged enough to have a roof over our heads that can protect us from the harshness of the winter. But hundreds of people live on the streets, often without thick blankets or enough clothes to keep them warm. In some parts of our country, the temperatures may drop below zero degrees, especially during nights, and it becomes a matter of life and death for the countless homeless people struggling to survive the season.

If you wish to help them, you can do your bit through the following NGOs that are helping the poor and homeless beat the cold this winter.

Project Sleepwell

Started by law graduates Shiven Varma and Arman Sood, in 2015, Project Sleepwell raises funds to buy and redistribute sleeping bags to the homeless in and around the Delhi NCR region. The project was born out of the idea that it is easier to carry a sleeping bag around, and also because they are more effective in insulating body heat. They have recently tied up with the Centre for Holistic Development (CHD), an NGO in south Delhi, to help them in their endeavour.

These shelters are managed by the trained homeless community workers. They also have a Night Outs programme, where they reach out to the homeless twice a week, between 10pm and 4am. They offer medical help during emergencies, assist them in accessing shelters, and donate blankets and warm clothes, among other things.
