Delhi Police Commissioner Invites Kung Fu Nuns to Teach School Girls Self-Defence
On Friday, Delhi's Police Commissioner, BS Bassi, invited the Drukpa Kung Fu nuns from Ladakh to train Delhi's school girls in self-defence. The Commissioner, who had earlier stated that it would be his pleasure to shoot or hang rapists , said, “Even though society needs to change, we will also have to strengthen young girls and women so much that they can give [a] befitting reply to those who try to harass them. These nuns are experts in self-defence and judo-karate.”
A group of 250 Drukpa Kung Fu nuns are cycling 2,500 kilometres from Kathmandu to Delhi to spread the message of women empowerment and environmental consciousness. The nuns are from Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, and Bhutan.
While this is not an ideal solution, it must be kept in mind that the fight to eliminate crimes against women is still in its nascent stage, and it would not be out of place to prioritise women's safety at all costs. Self-preservation is an instinct, and learning how to protect oneself is not being defeatist, or even accepting of the status quo, but simply an immediate solution to a larger problem.
